Travel to Montenegro

Montenegro is located at the middle Mediterranean region on south of Adriatic. Population is about 650 thousands. Administrative center of Montenegro is Podgorica. Official currency is Euro (€).

- International phone code for Montenegro is 382. Old code 381 is still in use and Montenegro shares this code with Serbia. Two mobile GSM operators covers nearly the whole country. The coverage is good and you will be able to get good signal even in high rural and mountain areas.

Air

Two international airports in Montenegro are Tivat airport and Podgorica airport. Two main avio companies that operate are JAT (Yugoslav Airlines - Serbian company) and smaller Montenegrin company Montenegro Airlines which flies from Podgorica to Budapest, Frankfurt and Zürich. Bigger European companies also have flights to Montenegro in their schedule like Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Swiss Air Lines, Adria Airlines and, British Airways (BA). Dubrovnik airport in neighboring Croatia is in proximity to Montenegrin border so it can be used to reach Montenegro.

Tivat airport is situated near the city of Tivat, on the Montenegrin coast. It has regular flights to Belgrade throughout the year, and has charter flights to major European destinations during the summer. Tivat airport is 20km from Budva and Herceg-Novi and 60 km from Bar.

Dubrovnik airport in Croatia is half hour drive from the Montenegro border, and coastal city of Herceg-Novi, and is served by many major airlines, so it might be a good option for tourist coming by plane.

Train

International trains are from Belgrade. Reservation is recommended. Trains connect Belgrade with Athens, Bucharest, Budapest, Istanbul, Ljubljana, Munich, Skopje, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Vienna, and Zagreb. Inter Raill Pass and Eurail are accepted and can be bought on Belgrade rail station. There is local train service, operating from Bar, through Podgorica and Kolasin and Mojkovac to Bijelo Polje. It is the cheapest way to travel from north to south and vice versa, quality of service is not on the high level.

Bus

Montenegro is well connected with neighboring countries, except Albania, and ticket prices are all under €25. During the summer, more seasonal lines are being introduced. European routes E65, E80, E762, E763 and E851 are passing through the country. Coming in from Serbia during the winter requires additional caution, as curvy mountainous road is not in good condition. Hiring a car to drive in to Montenegro from one of the surrounding countries can be problematic. Not all car hire companies will permit the journey. You will need a border pass.

Car

Drivers can use their national licenses. The roads in Montenegro are in generally good condition. Traffic police is everywhere so careful drive and confining to speed limits is highly recommended. Roads from Podgorica to Bar and to Niksic are fairly good roads, easy to drive on. Road from Podgorica through Cetinje to Budva is in good condition, but is a curvy mountainous road which rarely permits speeds over 70km/h. Headlights are required to be turned on non stop.
